Teddy Bear and Witch

Another quick messy sketch for this morning... my first Halloween costume ever was a teddy bear. My older sister was a witch that year and I spose it must have been my first year trick-or-treating. The next year, my Mom replaced the ears with bunny ears, the year after that I think I was Alice in Wonderland... we borrowed the costume from a friend and I remember thinking it was silly because someone had sewn "Alice" across the front of the dress in big felt letters... it seemed to me that the real Alice would not have done that.

I love this sketch. You have captured the 'What is this all about" expression that little ones often have when they go out for the first time.

(The bunny costume the next year was cute, too -- with a pom-pom for the tail!)

i always thought the same things about the disney costumes that little girls get with the pictures of the 'disney princesses' on the dress....why would the they have their pictures and names on their dresses??!?!

Thanks everyone! And Mom, I'd forgotten about the pompom tail :) Ha ha! I think I remember the ribbon being swapped from red to pink too.

cool.

I bet you got lots of candy that year.

It wasn't a pumpkin thank goodness. I suppose Alice was kinda ditsy, but probably remembered whose clothes to wear. It's a good example for what artists and writers need to watch out for. If you have to tell us what it is, it probably isn't. Or something like that.

Hey... I hadn't been to your blog in a little while. Great stuff lately. Nice Halloween sketch here. It's nice to see something Halloween-based that doesn't scare me to death. Now that I remembered your blog... I'll be back.
About the Alice thing -- I know exactly what you mean! At Disneyland they have costumes of the princesses etc and they all have little pictures of the princess on the dress and the crowns and its like "Ariel wouldn't have worn a picture of herself on her dress!" ... and then on the Simba outfit it says "SIMBA" across the chest in big letters. So silly of Disney!
I will start writing your letter now! I'm so sorry - school always takes up my time! :)

LOL! What a cute sketch! As another poster said, you really captured that "What the?..." expression on "Little Sarah's" face, so common to the younger Trick-or-Treaters.

Your story also brought back great memories of the homemade costumes my mom made for my siblings and me. One year, my brother went as a clown and my mom made this huge hat for him that read "Mike the Clown"....as if people needed that extra bit of information to understand this face-painted kid in the polka-dot outfit was A CLOWN. I still remember how embarrassed I was when he wore that silly hat. We still tease my mom about it.

Anyway, thanks for the great sketch and for reviving such happy memories.

Thanks for posting everyone, I've had so much fun reading the posts on this drawing.

One of my early ideas for the drawergeeks topic was "you in your favourite Halloween costume." I'd still love to see everyones art for that.
